Deep Brain Stimulation

Deep Brain Stimulation

What is Deep Brain Stimulation?

A treatment option for patients suffering from various movement disorders, Deep Brain Stimulation is an advanced medical procedure that involves the placement of special electrodes in specific regions of the brain to transmit continuous electric signals to the parts that are not functioning properly. The frequency of the current can be adjusted depending upon the specific requirements of the patient. DBS can help to reduce the need for medication and is also an option for those who have completely stopped responding to the medication. The procedure can be performed to target one side of the brain or both sides simultaneously.

How does DBS system work?

The DBS system has three different components, each having a specific function. These are as under:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet:

  • Neurotransmitter- It is a battery-powered device, responsible for generating the electrical impulses. It is usually placed inside the chest or the abdomen.
  • Electrodes- It is placed inside the brain and transmits the electrical impulses generated by the neurotransmitter to various parts of the brain.
  • Extension- It is an insulated wire that connects the neurotransmitter to the electrodes.

How can DBS help patients with Parkinson’s disease?

DBS has been recognised by the Food and Drug Administration as a treatment option for Parkinson’s disease, a progressive movement disorder marked by severe nerve stiffness and tremors.

  • DBS can help to reduce the existing motor symptoms like tremors and rigidity.
  • DBS can help to slow down or even prevent further complications
  • DBS can help to reduce the need for medication.
  • DBS can also help to stimulate non-motor functions and help with problems like mood swings and depression.
