Obesity is the root cause of many diseases and needs to be dealt with as soon as possible. We at CUSP make sure that you do not suffer because of obesity and provide multiple solutions and treatments to deal with it. Mini gastric bypass surgery is one of them.

Obesity can lead to many grave diseases which is why it is pertinent that people understand the importance of staying fit. Now, being fat and being obese are two different things and one must understand that. Body Mass Index (BMI) is one way of knowing whether you are fat or obese. If you have the Body Mass Index (BMI) that is lower than 30 then you are fat however, if your Body Mass Index is more than 30 then you are obese. An obese person is more prone to diseases that are mentioned below:

  • Hypertension
  • Diabetes
  • Joint pain
  • Stroke
  • High cholesterol
  • Heart disease
  • Infertility and complications during pregnancy
  • Fatty liver
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • Cancer
  • Mental health issues like anxiety, depression
  • Poor quality of life

Mini gastric bypass is done to prevent all the above-mentioned problems from advancing.

Mini-gastric bypass (MGB) is a bariatric metabolic procedure that is minimally invasive, short, trouble-free, and effective. It is a laparoscopic weight loss surgery with a slight variation to gastric bypass surgery. It is known to provide long-term results that are superior to other weight loss methods and also have relatively low risks attached to it. It is a promising, low-failure bariatric procedure that has been performed throughout the world and people have benefitted from it.

Mini gastric bypass is a malabsorptive procedure that limits the absorption of calories and nutrients by making the food pass directly through the stomach and into the mid-portion of the small intestine. Now, this is done by creating a narrow gastric tube and joining it to the middle of the small intestine. The difference between mini gastric bypass and other bariatric surgeries is that the pouch that is created by dividing the stomach into a large and a much smaller portion is relatively bigger and the anastomosis between the pouch and the intestine is also wider. This helps the patient eat less by making them feel full quickly. However, it still allows patients to eat more quantity of food than after an RYGB.

This surgery isn't for every person who is severely overweight, but for people who have tried weight loss methods such as dieting and exercise and failed. It is usually advised to people that have the:

  • Body Mass Index 40 or higher (extremely obese)
  • Body Mass Index of 35 to 39.9 (obese) having severe weight-related health issues like type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, severe sleep apnea etc.

Screening is done to see if you qualify for the surgery or not.

Following are the risks attached with mini-gastric bypass:

  • Digestive problems
  • Ulcers
  • Bleeding
  • Blood clot
  • Wound infections
  • Leak in the intestines

About CUSP Surgeons

The Term CUSP was coined by Dr. Paras Sharma, one of our founder members . Paras is an Oncosurgeon , from AIIMS after a breif association with us, he chose to shift to Jammu and is working as the Head of Narayana Cancer Institute, Katra. CUSP was an acronym for Comprehensive United Surgical Practice, and its literal meaning is that its a point of transition between two different states, which also signified our merging specialities and complementing each other.

Laparoscopic Surgery, Cancer Surgery, GI and HPB Surgery and Gynaec Surgery, the CUSP was the team where all these curves met and complimented each other.

The Mono of CUSP is a representation of all our specialities and very well incorporates them. The mono shows a uterus (represents Lap Gynaec and Gynaec Oncology), a Stomach (Represents Gastro ) and a Liver (Represents HPB). This Mono was designed by Dr. Nilesh Marmat who is a Radiologist by profession and is closely associated with Dr. Saleem Naik since college days. Dr. Nilesh is a very good artist besides being an excellent Avian photographer, his pictures have been published in National Geographic. The CUSP team is grateful for his contribution.
